MY Story
I was born in Kyazanga, Lwengo District, Uganda, and I am blessed with a loving family that gives me strength every day. I live with a rare condition called Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP), which has shaped much of my life’s journey, but it has never taken away my spirit or determination. I am married to my wonderful wife, Kate Namanda, whose love and support have been my greatest blessing. Together, we have eight beautiful children, all healthy and full of promise. My family is my greatest source of inspiration — they remind me daily why I must keep pushing forward, creating opportunities for others through the Baguma Skilling Foundation. From our home in Kyazanga, we continue to live with hope, faith, and the belief that true strength comes from the heart, not appearance.
1. INTRODUCTION
My name is Baguma Godfrey, born and raised in Kyazanga, Uganda. I am 57 years old and have lived my entire life with a rare condition known as Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP) — a disease that slowly turns muscles into bone.
2. eARLY LIFE & CHALLENGES
Growing up, I faced rejection, laughter, and misunderstanding. Many people saw only my physical difference, not my potential. I was told I could do nothing, that my life had no purpose. But deep inside, I knew I was meant for something greater — to show the world that ability is not defined by appearance.
3. turning pain into purpose
What started as a small act of kindness grew into a vision: a foundation that empowers people with disabilities through skills and community support. That dream became the Baguma Skilling Foundation.
4. My philosophy & message
My body may be locked, but my spirit is free. The real disability is not my condition — it’s the mindset that limits what people can achieve.
I believe that when you give someone a skill, you give them independence, confidence, and hope.
5. CALL TO ACTION
Through this foundation, I want to reach every person who has been abandoned, rejected, or told they are not enough. Together, we can build a world where everyone — regardless of disability — has a chance to live with dignity and purpose.
